Representations of the Gay Community in Pride
Firstly, we can explore the issues that the gay community face and the representation of how they deal with these issues that they face in their everyday life. The most striking example of this, is the attack at the book shop, where the lives of LGSM are endangered. This scene is very tense, we see all the members of LGSM put into a very dangerous situation that could have resulted in very serious or even fatal. This example, represents just a glimpse of the discriminative acts carried out against the gay community at the time, people were willing to risk multiple murder sentences just to fulfil a homophobic agenda. Despite this event, we see Mark immediately use the experience as influence to carry out the 'pits and perverts' concert. This represents the gay community as extremely optimistic and determined. Although they have just encountered a near death experience, they still want to remain in the presence of the media in order to raise more money for another discriminated community.
Personally, I do not think that any members of LGSM come across across as gay if were going to guess using stereotypical views, the way they are represented is less about the fact that they are gay but more about what they face and have to go through considering other characters feelings and views towards homosexual people. the only scene that brings connotations of the stereotypical characteristics of flamboyance and theatrical pose would probably be Jonathan's dance scene at the miners club in south wales, the facial expressions Jonathan makes emphasises his desire to make the performance dramatic, he is in his element and is so in the moment that he walks up onto the table as if its a catwalk and all the men have to move their pints.
Finally, in the final scene of the film, we see the Pride march. In this scene we see many of the movies themes being represented; such as, unity, friendship and pride itself. It is a very powerful and emotive scene where the unexpected is delivered to our screens. We see all the Welsh mining communities come together to support the Pride March of 1985, all of the individuals who have previously shown prejudice, discrimination and homophobia towards the gay community have now switched their beliefs and have travelled there to support the cause. This represents the gay community and LGSM as a triumphant factor in the progress of establishing the gay rights movement, almost heroes in both the movie Pride and in the history of our society.
