Representing Gender

Nick Laceys "Representing Gender"

Quotation 1: "Adults frequently depict ritualized versions of parent-child relationship , in which women are accorded childlike status. Women were typically shown lower or smaller than men using gestures which ritualized their subordination." (Gill 2007 in "Representing Gender") This shows the represenation of women in this piece is that they are compared to a child mind like state due to their actions such as deferential smiles. This shows how women cannot act how they want but have to act as they should in the norm.

Quotation 2: "Representing women as sex objects can freeze narrative flow while the spectators, and the characters in the film contemplate her eroticism" (Laura Mulvey in "Representing Gender"). This gives the male spectators in particular the chance to look the woman over almost as he would own her which connotes that men own women as sexual objects.

Quotation 3: "The Quattrocento system works to allow the spectator to master the knowledge presented in painting; in hollywood cinema, the films form is structured to allow the spectator to master women. (Laura Mulvey in "Representing Gender") This is similar as it explains how the male spectator can "Master" the woman as if he owned her and wants to know more about her and in most cases see more, just as if she was owned and this portrays women as just mindless objects.

Quotation 4: "When men dress as women, it is humourous; while vice versa is sexy. In a patriarchal society, it makes sense that a woman would want to be a man, but why would a man want to be a woman?" (Mary Ann Doane from "Representing Gender; Gender masquerarde and the queering of the gaze). This explains the difference in representation of genders by explains when a man dresses as a woman like in drag then its for comedic reasons while if a woman dresses is tight jeans and a shirt or t-shirt, they are then considered as sexy. It also goes on to say how being a man you are very dominant and are proud of your social status in a patriarchal society while women aspire to be like men and in this case begin to dress like them but for more
