Thelma and Louise
I have
analysed the two scenes from the film "Thelma and Louise" where they
pass a truck driver who is wanting their attention. In the first scene they
overtake the truck as the driver is making sexual gestures towards them and
also beeping his horn wanting their attention and more. This connotes just how
men feel towards women, seeing them all as objects that can be used at anytime
when the male wants it to. We then see nothing special as they overtake and
ignore. The important connotations are in the second scene.
They then see this
same truck driver on the highway again and then drag him in by playing along
with this, we then see a POV from the truck driver looking down on the women,
this relates to women being lower than men is this patriarchal society and
shows men looking down on women once again as just objects for their pleasure.
They then lead him out onto the deserty wildness in the middle of nowhere. We
then see various wide and long shots showing the wide open space that the women
and man are in possibly connoting the womens freedom as they are not surrounded
by men but rather in the middle of knowhere where stereotypes or sexism does
not excist but only in mens mind which we see from the truck driver. Thelma and
Louise then go on to question him and aggresively explain that it is not right
to treat women this way and as objects to be used for sex.
Throughout this
exchange of words there are various shot reverse shots between Thelma and
Louise signifiying their relationship as strong willed and in no need of a man
while also showing their power as they outnumber the truck driver. Thelma then
pulls out a pistol and shoots the truck causing it to blow up as we then see
the truck driver panic and afriad while we see Thelma and Louise take
ammusement out of this and are calm which is the opposite to what we usually
see in films as we often see the women in perill and scared while the man
protects or in some cases causes her to be in fear while in this case we see
the man in fear as the women are taking enjoyment out of it switching the
stereotypical gender roles around. We also notice in this sequence their
costumes, Thelma and Louise are both wearing tight jeans and dirty tank
top/t-shirt which would often be associated with men in american films.
