Week 5 Diary Entry

How I Met Your Mother

Personal Identity The characters are very average and down to earth so some people will see their own personality, values and behaviours reflected. If not people may see the characters, mostly employed, social and good models in society, also presented as funny and surrounded by friends, and want to become better people like what they're watching.
Information
There's often a moral teaching at the conclusion of each episode that could set the audience's standards, for example,if a controversial situation occurs, they're usually dealt with in the most civil manner, if not a lesson is learned on how to do so next time. It also provides an insight to New York life, American customs and culture. There's a very small amount of information provided, but it is there.
Entertainment & Escapism Watching the show gives a temporary release from your own life. The comedy and general happiness of the show keeps you interested because it makes you feel good and if it makes you feel good, you're going to want to watch it more. There is usually a progression in each episode which does keep it interesting to follow, although, it isn't difficult to do so which is relaxing. Also because it's on after school time, it's easy to turn on, watch and relax for a while. There is sometimes an emotional release, empathy for characters in situations you can relate to.

Personal Identity
The characters in this film, like in How I Met Your Mother are noting special and because it isn't some big sci-fi with lots of special effects, it's relatable and it's very possible to compare yourselves with the characters which is why I enjoy it.

Entertainment & Escapism
I find this film successful in its aim of comedy which is why I use it for entertainment. Also because it's so light-hearted and easy to watch. And, because of the storyline, you can use it to escape and put yourself in the situations, whether it's to make you feel good or to out yourself in the character's difficult situations.
