Audience Classifcation Homework

Audience Classification Homework

The mainstream- The mainstream are people that watch programmes so they can go and discuss them with other people so they can fit in. Speaking about the media is an everyday routine for the mainstream it is a sense of security for them. The mainstream is the largest group within the 4C’s which connotes that they have big following and feel secure speaking about different types of media with a large range of people. Hollyoaks is a programme the mainstream could watch because it’s full of drama and plenty of things to talk about. Also they could watch Geordie shore because they want to fit into society as the programme has a big audience and you can refer to the people’s lives in the show.

The Succeeder- The succeeder are the ones in our society that always want to feel in control and possess self-confidence in everything they do. The succeeder needs to succeed and get to the top that’s their goal! The programme they may watch is The Apprentice because it shows all the candidates fighting to get to the top showing self-confidence and being an organised person.

The Aspirer- The Aspirer are the ones in our society that care most about there image and what other people think of them. The Aspirer is eager and quick to learn things and is driven by other people’s opinions on them. The Aspirer believes image matters and I feel that they would enjoy fashion magazines like Vogue because it’s all about attractive people, fashion, image and appearance and they could relate to that text.

The Explorer- The Explorer are the ones that are driven to look for something new to discover. The Explorer’s core need in life is for discovery which could be new music or new films. They are not trying to fit in because they are unique and they don’t follow the crowd like the mainstream do. The Explorer could relate to the discovery channel which is focused on popular science, technology and history which will give the explorer different areas to explore.

b) I think that these categories are useful to find out what different types of media people consume. I also believe that the mainstream audience is used the most today because everyone seems to want to fit into society by buying the latest technology or watching popular reality TV shows. Although I agree with the categories I feel that there are too many people in the world and they might not fit into any of them categories.

c) Geordie Shore

Hayley is 18 years old and lives in Liverpool with her mum, dad and sister. Hayley is in the second year studying hair and makeup at Liverpool community college which is in the city centre 5 minutes from her home. Amy loves spending time with her friends watching programmes such as Geordie Shore and the valleys because she enjoys them and so do her friends. Hayley is obsessed with her image and loves going out with her friends to town and raves. She wants to carry on doing hair and makeup as she aspires to be a makeup artist.

d) I feel that Groupies relate to shows such as Geordie shore, The X factor, Britain’s got talent and the only way is Essex because these programmes have a mass audience and people can relate to them because they might watch them to fit in and discuss them with there friends. These shows are all for the mainstream audience!. Shows such as Dickisions real deal fit into the lifestyle category cowboys because they go on the show to earn some money off a item they don’t value anymore.
