Media Diary - Week 3

Audience Classification-Look Magazine

The Income and Status model

From the Income and Status model I would say that the magazines target audience are people from C1 downwards. I think this because the magazine is affordable and includes fashion items from the high street unlike Elle or Vogue who show high end clothing lines that only the elite can afford. I think people from A & B could also enjoy the magazine as a whole because it is well written and well set out but they may be more inclined to buy a more expensive magazine that includes high end clothes and models. I think this magazine is perfect for students in the E category because it is only £1.80 and includes quite a lot.

Audience Profiling

I think the typical consumer of this text would be a 17 year old female who is in college or sixth form. She would consider herself to be fashionable and up to date with the latest fashion but as she is a student she can’t afford the £4 price tag for a magazine. She would be White-British with no religious or political views as she is too young to vote. She would come from a reliable family with both her Mum and Dad in a stable place of work but she also has a Saturday job for extra money. This means that she can afford to take the advice the magazine gives and go buy the clothing items she likes.

Young and Rubicams ‘4C’s’

I believe that the typical audience member for Look Magazine would be The Aspirer because they enjoy being fashionable and looking good. They are also driven by other peoples perceptions of them making them need to be the centre of attention. Look magazine lingers on the ever-present theme of ‘If you look good you feel good’ and this is even demonstrated in their name. This shows me that The Aspirer would be the perfect audience member to consume this text.

The Lifestyle Category

I think that Look magazine appeals to Groupies and Trendies. Firstly I believe that the magazine appeals to Groupies because the whole premise of the magazine is making people look good and Groupies thrive on peoples perceptions of them and want to be accepted. Secondly I think that Trendies would consume this text because they also thrive on the admiration of others they may believe that looking good will do that. They also want people to feel jealous of them, tying in with The Aspirer from the 4C’s.
