A)
The Hypodermic Syringe Model.
The Inoculation/Desensitisation Model
B) The Hypodermic Syringe Model supports the belief that if an audience member is exposed to violent media text it will influence them so they may become a violent person, This model is not all negative as it could mean you are exposed to a heroic act in a media text then you may perform one but mostly negative behaviour is associated with this model. For example the game GTA V has been strongly criticized because its gameplay has been linked with crimes but this model does not take into account the personality of the audience or the freewill/choice of the audience member. The Inoculation/Desensitisation Model is a long term effect theory and it implies that as we are repetitively seeing shocking or violent scenes in media texts we become immune and unshocked by them as time goes by and that it almost becomes normal and part of everyday life therefore people may copy off what they see in the media as they will not find it disturbing or shocking as they have became used it seeing it so often for example drug abuse, There are lots of television shows and film that show realistic footage of drug abuse very often which The Inoculation/Desensitisation Model says that we are no longer shocked by this. This model has it faults again as it ignores our free will as an audience member and it treats the audience as passive.
3.An Active audience member has opinions and free choice and response to a media text, It suggests that an audience member can not just see one main message a text is trying to reach but that they can see a whole number of messages the text is trying to get across. An Active audience member is responsive and is in control of their opinion of the media text and has their own free will.
A Passive audience is the opposite of an active audience, a Passive audience is influenced by anything the media text wants you to be influenced by and have no free will over the decisions they make or their own actions. For example if a passive audience member watches a violent show or film they will then perform the act in reality.
4. I do not believe that violence in media texts influences real life behaviour in the slightest way possible. The notion is an insult to human intelligence and suggests we are some sort of Zombie with no morals or intelligence. For example if i watch a media text and i am exposed to a murder i may be affected by this but i will not go out and commit a murder just because i watched it on a screen. I think that it if you commit such a horrific act it depends on your personal experiences and upbringing and mental health, Not what you see on your screen.
5. The active audience theories are more acceptable because in my opinion they treat us as individuals and that we have intelligence and free will whereas Passive audience theories treat us as if we are stupid and are willing to do or believe anything which is wrong. I agree that many people may like the same thing but they also like completely different things aswell which the passive audience theories do not take notice of.
6. The media text i enjoy is a TV Program on Sky 1 called An Idiot Abroad, Using the uses and gratifications model i would say i enjoy the show mainly because of Entertainment/Escapism as i find it hilarious and it has a very dry humour which engages me for the running time it is on for and makes me forget about other things, Another reason i watch this is because i can identify with the man who the show revolves around called Karl Pilkington as i can compare him to people i know who i think are similar to him and he is from the north west of England like me, I suppose their is some element of information as he travels around the world and it gives me the chance to learn what other cultures do and the history of the country and its current affairs.
7. A preferred reading to this advertisement is that the advert is implying that drugs can change you physically and change your appearance. The advert shows a woman's face changing as her drug addiction grows almost to the point that she is skeletal which shows drugs are extremely dangerous and bad for your health, Also the pictures are almost like mugshots which imply that the woman is a criminal and it highlights that drugs are illegal and you can serve time in prison for it. This will shock the preferred audience and make them see that drugs dont only affect your inside.
An oppositional reading to this advert would be that because the person featured in the advert is a woman, that women are more prone to drugs and are more likely to take drugs as there is not a man involved in the advert, Also the fact that the woman has become almost skeletal an oppositonal reader may believe that it is dehumanising people who take drugs and that they are not the same as the rest of society.
