A film would not be successful without the factors of marketing and promotion. One of these ways that helps consume an audience is the adverts, which there are two which were created for this film, and American and a British version. The one which I thought gave more of a plot to the narrative was the American one, this has the combined image of the male and female which connotes these are the main characters, but also sets the idea of the romance genre, the blurred lights and bright colors represents the Bollywood genre, the film poster giving this information through one still image, is there to entice the audience the watch the film.
Trailers are also important when it comes to marketing the film. The trailer allows the audience to the have a look into the genre and the themes, and if this interests them enough, then this will make them go see the film, it also allows you to have a quick connection with the characters and makes the audience also want to see more into their lives and more importantly how the film will end. The trailer indulges the audience with many enigma codes, which is also another reason the audience will want to go and see the film, as they will need answers to this enigma codes, they will want to find out the action code. The quick look into the film, considering on average it is around 2 minutes long, it still leaves us wanting more out of what we are already given, which is not a bad thing. A trailer also involves plaudits, which is all part of the ‘two step flow’ theory, the trailer shows other peoples reviews in newspapers, with quotes of what they think of the film (these are always positive) but this is all part of the theory that other people’s opinions can change our own, so if they see the trailer and don’t find it interesting then the plaudits are a chance of changing people’s minds.
One of the most modern ways of marketing and promotion is social media. The film has its own website (fox searchlight) which gives information about the film, this allows the audience the get extra information before or even after seeing the film. There are also such things as fan pages, such as the Facebook page for the film; this page has 2.8 million likes, but when someone likes a fan page this comes up to anyone else who they have as a friend on Facebook, which may result in them liking the page to, this is an on-going procedure.
