About the film THE DETECTIVE "...the star's unassailable heterosexuality and centrality to the action enforce a narrative function of gay passivity, requiring  straight to act for us" 

This looks more at the social concept of gay people rather than the representaion of gay itself. It shows how the beginning of when homosexuality was becoming more accepted in society. However like many views this could suggest how gay people are 'different' to everybody else as people have made a big deal of a straight man playing a gay character where as many people who suggest hat gays are no different to heterosexual people so should be treated the same.
