Lord of the Rings

In the first shot it is an extreme wide shot meaning that the Hobbits are not clearly visible. It is a low angled shot making the Hobbits look vulnerable and trapped to whatever they are about to encounter. When the horse and wraith arrive into the shot the camera pulls back, this positions the Hobbits in an even smaller space. The wraith and horse fill a large amount of the frame telling us that he is the dominant character. In the second shots the camera only focuses on Frodo because he is the one in possession of the ring; he is the most important. It is a close up of Frodo's face showing his expression, which is fear. The high angle of the camera tells us that Frodo is weak compared to the wraith. In the third shot it shows the four hobbits hiding under the roots of the tree, this gives us the impression that the Hobbits are unaware of what is above them creating a sense of mystery. When the horse and wraith appear, they are both all black suggesting the present evil. The wraiths metal armour tells us that he is a strong, dominating character. Both the horse and wraith are wearing black metal armour although telling us that they are evil and strong, also telling us that they do not belong in the natural environment they have currently entered. In the fourth shot the wraith is leaning over the tree looking down if he can see anything, the Hobbits are all looking up towards the wraith. This tells us that because the wraith is above them It is more powerful than them, also the low angled shot tells us that in that moment the Hobbits were particularly vulnerable. The position the wraith is in is blocking out the sunlight and what looks the Hobbits only escape. The fifth shot emphasises the physical size difference between the wraith and Frodo also making the shot more intense making us think the wraith is getting closer as Frodo has less space. When the insects start to crawl from under the Hobbits this connote death as they are running away from the wraith, this shows us he is pure evil. In the last shot the camera changes from a close up to an extra close up of Frodo's face showing his concentration growing harder and harder as he is tempted to put the ring on his finger as he knows he is not going to defeat the wraith. When the camera zooms into the ring as Frodo is about to put it on his finger the scene becomes more intense because Frodo and the viewers know this is his last option to escape the wraith, however what they don't know is what will happen when the ring is put on Frodo's finger leaving the audience in suspense.
