Media Diary; Week Four

Prism

Released by Capitol Records on October 13th, Prism is the fourth studio album released by American singer Katy Perry. On an album that contains multiple anthems, 'Roar' is the most accessible, and deservedly became Katy's eighth number one single. It debuted at top of the U.S. BillBoard 200, with her best opening week to date - 286,000 copies sold. The album also peaked at number one in Austrailia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Prism became the fastest selling album by Perry, the second best-selling album in Austrailia in 2013, and the second best-selling album released by a woman in the United States in 2013. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry labelled Perry 'A global phenomenon.'

While the album was initially planned to be 'darker' than her previous material, Prism ultimately became a prominently dance-inspired record. Perry worked with several past collaborators, while enlisting new producers and guest vocals. Much of Prism revolves around the themes of living in the present, relationships & self-empowerment. The release of the album spawned five number one singles, 'Roar', ' Unconditonally', 'Dark Horse', 'Birthday' & 'This Is How We Do.'

The genre of the album is pop. I personally believe that the main targeted audience would be young teenagers. After experiencing the 'Prismatic World Tour' I definitely admired Perry so much more, and listened to the album more oftenly. I feel as though I can relate to most of the songs within the album, the majority of Katy's songs make me feel happy or more confident within myself. I admire the range of Perry's songs, and how each one differs in meaning, some of which tells the listener about her as a person. I would definitely recommend the album to anyone interested in her music, and would therefore give the album a star rating of 5/5 purely because of it's soul.
