Media Diary Week 1

Imagine Dragons | Night Visions Album Review

I was first introduced to Imagine Dragons by music channels, radio stations, Spotify Most Listened, it was literally everywhere. This was because their song 'Radioactive' which seemed to be in the top 40 for weeks. This song was so popular Imagine Dragons actually rewrote Billboard Hot 100 history as the song logged its record-breaking 77th week in the charts. After listening to 'Radioactive', it is easily understood why it is was so favoured because of how catchy it is. Just because it's catchy doesn't have to mean that it's annoying and overplayed. This song is so different to many other songs due to the active airplay and explosive dub-step beats. I just wanted to listen to more of their songs to see if they were able to keep up these changes throughout their album. And although this is an alternative rock song it contains cryptic lyrics of apocalyptic and revolutionist theories, making them even more unique which just intrigued me to their album more.

The song 'It's Time' describes the narrator's to change in the face of great turmoil. I love the sound of the song and all the different instruments used in it, as much as I enjoy the lyrics, I could also listen to them alone. The lyrics really speak to me though and I'm sure a lot of other people too. To be honest, I don't think this song can get any more perfect, I'd like to imagine the meaning behind the song is to try your all to be what someone else wants you to be is useless because after trying your best to change you realise you're never going to change who you really are and you should just be proud of who you are. The song is most definitely inspirational.

Tyler Robinson reinforces the inspiration in the song because of how courageous he was and how proud he was of himself despite the fact he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16. Tyler Robinson was a massive fan of the Imagine Dragons and before he died got to meet them and bond with them, the band even made a charity to help others with cancer. The band included a clip from the 2011 show where they met Robinson. The music video concludes with footage captured by Robinson's brother during the show where the band dedicated Tyler's favourite song "It's Time" to the teen. Reynolds had Robinson sing into the microphone and embraced him during the song, with the audience chanting Robinson's name afterwards. This video gives me goosebumps making me love the song more.

Although I love this album I did find some songs are quite mundane and boring as they have the same mid tempo beat. But this doesn't bother me due to the wide range of unique songs that show the emotional side to the album which enlighten the repetitive genre conventions. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who likes the indie/alternative rock genre because of how meaningful and different the songs are to any other band.

9/10
