Narrative Structure - Slumdog Millionaire Exam Prep

How conventional is the narrative structure of your chosen text?

I think the narrative structure in Slumdog Millionaire can be best described as Portmanteau, a bag that opens up into several parts. Anything that's narratively alternative is by definition a portmanteau film. The Narrative structure itself is a collection of inter-related stories held in a single vessel (Which in this case is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire), although this isn't clear to audiences in the first 20 minutes. The narrative is split into 3 stages of Jamal's life, all leading to the 'present' Jamal who is a contestant on the widely popular Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and on his way to winning 20'000'000 rupees. The gameshow is crucial to the Narrative of the show, as it allows the narrative to progress with the use of Action and Enigma codes, with the answer to each question, a story or section of Jamal's life plays. This raises questions for the audience like, how will he know this? An unconventional narrative like this has its advantages, as its different audiences may see it as a challenge, this may gain more of an audience than generic narratives that provides no challenge to the audience. Modern Hollywood has prepared us, as a mainstream audience, for a standard and easy to follow point A to B narrative, with the occasional narrative device like a flashback. Instead, an audience may gain a sense of satisfaction when piecing together this non-linear unique narrative.
