The movie Friends with benefits is apart of the romantic comedy genre, this is evident in the lighting, camera and editing.
The trailer begins with a parallel narrative between the
two central characters (Jamie and Dylan). It starts off with both of the characters relationships ending in similar ways which gives the audience omniscient information and acts as an action code because the audience will expect them to then be drawn to each other because of this shared history.
However when the two characters eventually cross paths they become close friends instead of romantically involved, this twist juxtaposes the stereotypical narrative stages of a romantic plot used frequently in the romantic comedies, instead of them starting off hating each other to then falling in love which is a typical plot often used.
The characters are frequently shot in close-ups edited using shot reverse shot, one instance where this is used would be when Jamie and Dylan are in a café eating their lunch bonding over their previous relationships, the framing used in the close up leaves little space apart from both their faces signifying to the audience that there is a growing relationship between the two protagonists which is a type of enigma code because the audience will be wondering what sort of relationship they are forming, is it just friendship or something more? the close ups used in the trailer also empathies on the characters expressions and reactions towards each other whilst also forming an identification between the characters and the audience.
The lighting used in this trailer is high key which is a visual signifier of the comedic genre and is a visual signifier that the film will have a happy ending and also has connotes humour.
The film is set in New York City which is expected in this genre because cities like New York connote love and romance. In my opinion I think New York is the iconography of this film because a big romantic city such as that is always a setting used both in rom-coms and the romantic genre.
There are a number of stock characters used in the trailer who push Jamie and Dylan together, one instance would be the scene were Jamie and her mother are sitting in the park when her mum says "it seems your really into this guy".
The theme of this movie is finding love in unexpected places, which is a conventional plot often used in romantic comedies.
