Although Louis Theroux's authenticity is abutment in his documentaries, for Louis and the Nazis there are no doubts that the documentary utilises many conventions associated with various sub-genres and modes of documentary also. There is a particular use of Cinema verite and the Participatory mode as well as many visual elements that are associated with Documentaries.

The documentary opens with louis narration "My journey began three weeks earlier". Voice overs are typically conventional for cinema vertie and direct cinema, they are described as the "voice of god",voice overs should be authoritative, encouraging the audience that they have a specialist knowledge like in David Attenborough nature Documentaires. Although louis narrates the documentary he is reacting to the footage on screen and only learns as much as the audience does. A scene where this is best exemplified is the final scene of the documentary were he and April have a disagreement over her brain washing her eleven year old children into being racist Natzis. No solution is offered at the end of their argument and after a pregnant pause the two stare at each other the last dialogue from the voice over states"My time with the Natzis came to a frustrating end, with an argument in a kitchen with a mother of two". Instead of using the voice over to offer resolutions so the audience understands he uses it to reveal the complexity of the characters the documentary depicts. He is attempting to show us that April, Skip etc have psychological issues and there isn't a real, justifiable reason to be a Natzi, he wants the audience to share his frustration. Another convention of documentaries is hand-held camera, in louis' case his entire documentary is filmed using this, it is easily identifiable as there is a constant sense of movement throughout. which is created by this, in between Tom and Rachel there are numerous shot of louis driving across vast deserts and motorways, this signifies that he is on a journey an all of his destinations are miles away. It also helps with louis positioning of the audience, we are often let to just watch as the interviews have a fumble of words, mistakes and interruptions. After Louis and Tom go and visit Toms client who is originally from Peru and also a close friend louis quizzes Tom about how he can claim to be racist if he constantly surrounds himself with people from different ethnic backgrounds.The camera lingers silently and awkwardly on both Tom and Louis face making the footage look and feel unedited




Sitcoms have evolved over the years, as a consequence there are some sitcoms that are extremely traditional and there are some that are a lot more modern. Gavin and Stacey is a perfect balance between traditional and modern,

When coming up with ideas for my product Auto-pilot I was inspired by Alex Garlands 2015's film Ex Machina, I chose to produce this film with another student as a joint project sharing the roles of director and editor. The target audience for Auto-Pilot is the explorer from Young & Rubicam 4C's, aged between eighteen to fifty. This is because the film exemplifies alternative narrative systems which challenges the audiences expectations, this is the main attraction of the film making it appeal to a niche audience. The audience will fit into the Cynic and Utopian  lifestyle category, because the film fulfils both of the desires to find something to complain and be angry about , it also builds connections with reality giving the audience a message that could help them change their lives and other peoples. From the demographic social scale the target audiences will be A,B and C1 grades, this is because the film requires a sophisticated and intellectual audience to be able to take the preferred reading.  

Auto-Pilots genre is psychological thriller, this is illustrated through the narrative structure, themes and main character in the film. The film has a non-linear narrative structure and challenges Todorovs five stages, it also doesn’t conform to props character types, the characters being extremely complex. Auto-Pilot represents two groups, Youth and men. There are only two character in Auto-Pilot which are Marnie and Gavin, this excluding stock characters like Louise.  Both representations are negative, men are depicted as passive, unbalanced in thought and pathetic, and youth are helpless  victims.  

My research informed me that conventional narrative must be chronologically constructed otherwise it could destroy rules of logical causality which defines narrative. I decided to challenge this in my film by using a non-linear narrative which was depicted as a flashback and narrated by the protagonist. I did this to manipulate the audience into trusting Gavin so when it was revealed he was unhinged they would continue to align with the character, this resulting in the audience sympathizing with him even after killing his daughter. I also learned that very often narrated events don’t conform to the linear model and narrative closure and can be problematic and ambiguous, I portrayed this in my film during the final scenes. I edited the film so the audience is aurally manipulated by the voice over which distracts them from  what is being depicted on screen, the ending shows us what the protagonist didn’t see. I did however add subtle hints in the script so when the twist was revealed the audience would then be able to understand exactly what had happened. My research also taught me that in conventional narrative the characters should be psychologically well-round, I challenged this convention in Auto-Pilot by using a character that appears gives the appearance of being level- headed and normal but is eventually revealed to be irrational, his existence depending solely on routine which not only harms himself but others around him. I was informed on how important it is to stay within the boundaries of  film genre so that the audience can build expectations which the film can either fulfill or challenge. This inspired me when coming up with ideas for the film, I decided to make a psychological thriller and uses themes such as death, the mind and reality. Levi Strauss said that narrative can only end on the resolution of conflicts I challenged this by ending the film ambiguously, unlike Todorovs idea that narrative should begin with an equilibrium then comes the disruption and eventually the return or change in equilibrium I decided to begin the film at the equilibrium but end it at the recognition of the conflict to leave the audience to decided what the final outcome of the film was.  

In conclusion my project was heavily influenced by my findings however I chose to challenge some. I think that the target audience would take the preferred reading to

The first publication was in july 1989, the original editor and chief was Barry Mcllheney, the now editor is Terrry White. It is the biggest magazine in the UK and is also sold Globally to countries such as United Sates, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, italy, Australia and South Africa. Average reader agesd between 18-40, employed and in a relationship, not married necessarily but a university graduate.

Representation of Ethnicity& Race in Kickass

The majority of the characters in "Kick-ass" are white americans, few black characters are shown however the characters that are shown are used as stock characters. For example Razule who is mentioned three times in the film is a villain the Kick-ass most defeat for katy his damsel in distress. Katy says she met Razule at a blood bank where she volunteers, she goes on to talk about how she felt sorry for him and the awful upbringing he had to endure which already signifies that he is the stereotyped black man making petty crimes in order to survive. This we later on found to be true when kick-ass arrives in Razule 'Hood'. as he enters the apartment building we notice there is a large black guy guarding the door, he is dressed in casual attire, a simple t-shirt and jeans with a large gold change around his neck which visually signifies power and richness.  When kick-ass approaches him at first he mocks him asking "what the fuck are you supposed to be". Once kick-ass announces why he's here his whole body language shifts and he lets his guard up, he stands up straighter his expression becoming extremely serious then says "who the fuck are you"

We feel that the mining community are represented as having traditional values and they don't like change.Also we believe that they are represented as being isolated from the rest of the county, not because Pride is set in a rural area but because the mining community has been bullied by the goverment.

Narrative-

This film is shot in chronological order and depicted over a one-year time period. It is arguable that this film uses Todorov’s theory of narrative, however it only uses this structure singularly with Mark and Bromley. Bromley is followed throughout the narrative and has the most prominent character arc, this being said mark also is followed throughout
