I'm going to analyse What If. What If is a hybrid romcom set in London. Directed by Michael Dowse and starring Adam Driver, Daniel Radcliffe, Jemima Rooper, Lucius Hoyos, Mackenzie Davis, Megan Park, Rafe Spall, Tommie-Amber Pirie and Zoe Kazan the film juxtaposes the conventions of a love story because it becomes love vs friendship.
The clothing that the characters wear tells us that this film is set in modern day society, also the house parties and ping pong games give the impression that this film is about youths and the struggle of finding love. The disruption in the film is Wallace, a medical school drop out who has repeatedly been involved in bad relationships and has decided to put his love life on hold. However when he meets Chantry he has an instant connection with her creating a close friendship. The main twist in the film is when Wallace and the audience discover that Chantry has a boyfriend, until then the audience and Wallace's narration was restricted and we were seeing from Wallace's point of view. From the film being seen from Wallace's POV the film is constantly moving forward, making the camera energetic and giving the film pace however when we find this out we realise from the break with the conventions we become startled and something unexpected happens, we get this build up of tension thinking that this relationship between Wallace and Chantry is about to blossom to only find out that this relationship will never move any further forward it stops right where it is, at friendship.
Captions are used throughout the trailer to help give the audience a background of the plot, they read; "What if - You met the right one - At the wrong time" it also gives critic reviews to make the viewer of the trailer want to view the film such as 'sparkling performances' 'rich, full and painfully funny'.
Although we know that the relationship is at a holt, we many shot reverse shots between the characters, between Chantry's boyfriend and Wallace, this creates a relationship between the characters and in this case not a positive one, however the same usage of shot reverse shot is used between Chantry and Wallace which creates a positive relationship showing the connection between the two. These types of shots can help the audience identify relationships between the characters, and the shot has been used positively and negatively in this trailer.
