War of the Worlds was a novel written by H.G Wells in 1898. It reflected the cultural attitudes and social trends of the time it was written. The themes visible in this film are; Paranoia, fear of others and fear of annihilation.
The book was re-sculptured into different forms of media as well as the book. A radio drama was made in 1938, a first War of the Worlds film was made in 1953 and a second film made in 2005. Although all of these versions of War of the Worlds are about the same thing, they are allegorically different. H.G Wells' intention of War of the Worlds was linked to paranoia because of the fears of cultural destruction, fear of immigrants and end of the world fears.
The radio dramas link to paranoia was because of the raise of the Nazi parties in Germany and fascism in Europe, fear of a second world war and a fear of fascism in communism.
The 1953 films connection with paranoia is fear of the nuclear annihilation, fear of the USSR and fear of communist infiltration.
The 2005 film connected to Paranoia because of fear of terrorist attacks, war on terror, fear of non-American nationals and the government.
The 1898 novels connection to fear of others was because people felt threatened by the influx of foreign nationals and people saw immigrants as a threat to British culture and their cultural ideologies. The 1938 Radio drama linked because of its fear of fascism and Nazi's, the fear of ideological challenges from communists, the fear of foreign nations such as Japan, Russia, Germany, Italy etc. The 1953 films links to fear of others because of the USSR backing communist global revolution, conflict with Cuba, fear of immigrants in the US. Fear of Islamic terrorists, fears of reprisals from nations at war with the USA and fear of weapons of mass destruction all linked to The 2005 film of War of the Worlds.
Fear of annihilation was connected to The novel because people feared a collapse of the British Empire, a fear of immigration and cultural destruction.
It was also connected to The radio drama because of fears of World War II, emergence of nuclear technology, numerous threats to the US National Security from Europe and Asia.
The 1953 film was connected to fear of annihilation because of the fears of a nuclear annihilation from a very real threat, fear of a World War III, fear of communist infiltration and ideological shift. Fear of annihilation because of fear of future terrorist events, fear of all out war and fear of 'alien' cultures - especially Islam.
