For this weeks media diary, I will be explaining who I think the audience is for the channel 4 show, Misfits.
Misfits was a British science-fiction, comedy-drama television show on E4, about a group of young offenders sentenced to work in a community service program, where they obtain superpowers after a strange electrical storm.
I believe that this program can target 2 types of audiences. The mainstream and the explorer.
The mainstream with be targeted as this show isn't just a one off. It has many shows within several series. The mainstream will appeal to this as it fulfils their need for security as there would be a new episode every week. Also, it targets the mainstream as it was shown on a well-known channel. This would appeal to the mainstream as they connect with big, well-established brands.
I also believe that it is targeted at the explorer because it is different to the typical sci-fi genre. Normally it would be in outer space and contain a lot of metal and alien type features, however Misfits doesn't. It has a sort of real feel to it due to the fact that without the superpowers, these 5 young offenders would be seen as 'normal' as we know that many young people today become like these. This appeals to the explorer as it is something different and fulfils their need for discovery.
