Ideology

If someone does not want to have sex then you must not force them too because this is rape.  Relationships should be equal and not enforced on one person because this is a criminal offence. Rape cannot be undone and the message from this advert is if you could see yourself sexually assaulting someone would you stop yourself? Would you have drunk so much to have gotten yourself into a state where you just don’t care? Think before you act because it doesn’t matter how drunk you are if you rape someone it’s your own fault.

Characters/visual style

The advert extreme close up shots to show the person behind the glass’s face determination to stop his drunk self-making possibly one of the biggest mistakes he will ever make.  The camera starts as a medium shot of the two in the bedroom kissing before the boy forcibly pushes the girl onto the bed after she has said she wants to go back downstairs, this allows the audience feel tense because they know what is about to happen to this girl and they don’t want it to but they can’t stop it. The camera shows a shot looking down at the girl, this influences how vulnerable she is at this moment again impacting on the audiences reaction to wanting to help her. The camera then swaps to look at the boy behind the glass so he can see himself and what he is doing to the girl, the audience are placed to see that if the boy committing the assult could go back in time he wouldn’t do it as we see the emotion and regret on his face from the CU. The setting used is a bedroom at what looks to be a party, the two teens are displayed as drunk.

Lines of Appeal

There are no real shock tactics used here, however the message from the ‘Would you stop yourself’ campaign is clear that no matter what the circumstances are rape is not acceptable. The advert is quite graphic in the way it displays the rape scene, giving the audience a need for their own safety and for others who are in these situations. The contact information is displayed at the end of the advert also using enigma codes making the audience ask themselves would I report rape? Would I rape? Why would someone rape? At the end of the advert it says ‘search: this is abuse’ this gives anyone who has experienced rape the chance to personally identify with the advert and anyone in the future who want to help prevent others and themselves from rape a chance to donate to help make a difference.
