Living Color - Cult of Personality
Camera/Editing
The editing in the video is fast pace and is a mixture of historical footage, live performance and a studio performance. The shots fade into each other meaning at certain points 3 or more different sets of archived footage are shown without a noticeable cut being made
Narrative
The narrative tells the story of how propaganda used by political figures can both be positive and negative, this is referenced with edits of speeches by Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy and Malcolm X. Negatively for example "I'll tell you 1 + 1 makes 3". Because a person with all the power has told you this you have to believe it and repeat the message despite knowing it is obviously not know. The line is also a reference to the '1984' book by George Orwell, a man is tortured until he repeats that 2 + 2 = 5.
Conventional/Unconventional
It is conventional in the sense that it the video incorporates a live performance into the video which has become conventional or rock/metal shows. It is however unconventional in that the majority of the video is composed of archive footage.
What Works?
The camera cuts which are fast and work well, The little girl watching the TV screen represents the viewer in the video listening and becoming hypnotized by the propaganda. However i feel it would be more effective it there was at least one shot of the band together to show the strength in numbers that a political power can hold
