La Haine & City of God Narrative

Both COG and LH comment upon cycles of violence, and both convey them in a way, which reflects the setting of each film. LH depicts its messages upon social and political issues through a realistic view, this is achieved by the linear narrative which follows a trio over a 24 hour time frame, it follows them almost in a documentary style, such that the film is able to achieve the feeling of realism and convey the serious messages the film showcases. However to contrast, the narrative of COG is non linear, and disrupted at the beginning, such that the film starts and ends at the same point, the use of this is to depict the idea also of a cycle of violence, however COG depicts the messages behind the film in a more entertaining less realistic way. The film simply comments on the cycle of violence, because through the use of a non linear narrative, the film does not achieve realism straight away, and also the fact the film is set over three decades means the film is commenting upon minor areas of each time frame, where as LH is able to showcase many social and political problems in a 24 hour frame, to portray all the problems in a way that suggests, the trio we see in the film are just any regular group of immigrants in the projects of frame, and suggests the idea that what happens to them could happen to anyone in there environment, and the use of a circular narrative suggests the start and end of LH will most likely happen to somebody else. Both films, convey the message of the problems in both environments, yet COG does so in an entertaining less realistic way, and LH in a more documentary realistic way.
