Paper Towns review.
If you enjoyed John Green’s film, The Fault In Our Stars, the you will very disappointed with his new film ,based on a book of his, Paper Towns. Staring Cara Delevingne as Margo Spiegelman and Nat Wolff as Quentin Jacobsen, set in a quite town in Florida. Who since young kids,in the film, have been the best of friends but slowly drifted apart over many years. But after one unforgettable night both would remain friends for the foreseeable future. The night starts off with Margo intruding into Quentin’s room which sparks an emotional journey full of laughter, fun and excitement that the both embark on. Getting revenge on some of Margo’s closest friends, starting with her ex boyfriend and moving on to one of her best friend. After this night Margo failed to show up to school the next day, which worried Quentin and he set out to look for her, following clues Margo left behind before she disappeared, leading all the way up to New York City. Where eventually Quentin did find Margo. However from that point onward I felt like the film was a disappointment.
At a running time of approximately 105 minutes, I do not believe Paper Towns is worth the watch as it’s the same as plot as ever other teen, romance film out there, the girl gets in some sort of trouble or danger and the boy is always there to save the day. Quentin gathers some of his friends to try and track down Margo Spiegelman. Its just another dry love story about a boy who likes a girl in his school, who happens to live across the road from him, dwelling on the idea that if he helps or saves the day the girl, Margo, will magical fall madly in love with him. But all dreams of this happening fall apart when Margo tells him that she isn't coming home to their quite little town in Florida, she would rather stay in a Paper Town, alone as she describes it. A little bit of a twist to the story. Besides knowing the fact that in the end the real journey wasn't about trying to get Margo to come back home the friends try to live their last summer together before they all move on to college, experiencing things for the first time like skipping a class or traveling across the USA (tracking down a young girl that may or may not be there when they arrive and who may or may not want to come back with them).
The movie kind of felt like a let down, it had been advertised everywhere for about 3 months before the movie premiere, everyone was very excited about the film including myself, but the main let down for me, beside the whole the boy goes after the girl to try and save the day, was the ending of the film. I expected an interesting and exciting ending but I was very disappointed when I watched how the produce and director decided to end the film. Even if one of the charters had died it would have been a better ending to the film, giving the viewers an unexpected ending and a twist to the tale but it was like a fair tale ending, although the boy didn't get the girl, everyone did live happily ever after. Am not saying that they should have killed a character but anything would have been better to end the film than it did.
I could only imagine the way people who had read the book would have felt, the fans of John Green, who also read The Fault In Our Stars. They must have waited so long to finally watch the film with both Cara and Nat connecting with fans through out the use of social media, to fill them in on things happening with the film. With all the press the film as getting I was expecting a big shock at the end of the film or even through out the film to really get me excited about it but nothing really caught my attention. A real let down to me and all the other people who were excited for the film.
To conclude I would not recommend this film to anyone. With the way the film starts, trying to find a girl just to tell her you love her, to the way the film ends, in sheer disappointment. With nothing exciting happening in the film, it’s just like any other film out there. Predictable.
