During the production of the film a lot of factors took affect, for example the actual filming of the had to be changed, instead of a normal large static camera used for normal films a hand held camera was used instead to help immerse the audience and add to the cinematic experience.
Another factor that affected the production of the film was the casting, the cast needed to be from India and from the slums, this then created a language barrier between the English director and the Indian actors. Also the main three characters needed three actors to play them from three different age groups so this caused an issue to find three people in the slums who look similar.
In the film a certain scene was filmed on a real railway, this was obviously an issue as the railway was a danger to the actors but also the railway was in regular use, meaning the platforms were busy making it difficult to film. The actors performing on a railway was difficult as it was a hazard to them but they are famous and the Indian people on the rail way would become distracted and begin crowding the actors, which was obviously an affect on filming.
Marketing and promotion
The film used different posters to advertise the film, for example the poster below;
The poster was successful as it created enigma codes and revealed the films genre, but also the poster creates a perception that the film is different to others. The poster reveals the romance part of the sub-genre through the image of the boy and girl, they are both around the same age and are pictured next to each other suggesting a heterosexual relationship between the two also the image shows them next to each other but looking away from each other, this facial expression could suggest they are looking for each other giving the feel of "Lost Love" which is usually a key theme in the romance genre. The two characters looking for each other sets up the enigma code of "do they find each other?". Other parts of the poster that reveal the films genre is the tagline, framed as a question from the show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, the tagline states about lost love, which as mentioned before is key to the romance genre, but the options of 'Money, Luck, Smarts and Destiny' also link to the romance genre.
Genre
Slumdog Millionaire is a hybrid of two different genres, romance and drama. The film features different conventions from both genres, for example the romance genre is commonly between a male and a female who develop a hetrosexual relationship, which is done in slumdog millionaire through Jamal and Latika.
Another feature from the romance genre in the film is the plot itself, in most romance films the protagonist (usually male) falls in love with the girl and then some sort of obstacle comes between them which then the protagonist must over come in order to be with the girl, which usually ends in a success for the protagonist and the plot eventually ends with "The Kiss". This plot takes place throughout the film as Jamal falls in love with Latika and goes onto Who Wants To Be A Millionaire to find her and he eventually does.
