It would be fair to say that Slumdog Millionaire is a hybrid genre, or perhaps even more than that. Although at first look we may see that film as a romance, there are lots of conventions of other genres that would dispute that Slumdog is merely a romance. For example, the film is very dramatic, and furthermore has a lot of dramatic moments that go with it, such as when Jamal, Salim and Latika are running away from the kidnapping, or later on in the film when Jamal is chasing after Latika to try and save her. These dramatic moments are furthermore reinforced and backed up by a dramatic score. There are also hints of comedy in the film, however these are only in the light hearted moments of the film, when we hear the cheap joke, or whether it is more slapstick such as when Jamal and Latika attack Salim with chillies while he slept. There are also moments of Bollywood in the film, such as moments like the end were the cast embraces in an epic dance, and the use of Hindi in some parts of the film.
However, even when considering the hints of all these other genres, the most significant and underlying one is that romantic one. Throughout the film Propps character types are portrayed throughout, such as Jamal who is the hero, and Latika, the princess. This is iconography of romatic films, as the helpless girl needs to be rescued. And how better to finish of a romance with a kiss and embrace at the end
