NSPCC Advert

The advert that I am going to talk about in this analysis is an abuse advert by the NSPCC. When you first look at the advert clearly on show is a young girl that has a mute symbol covering her mouth, this gives the impression that this young girl has been abused in the past and is scared to talk about it with anyone. The point that the advert is trying to make is that if you have been abused and you dont contact the NSPCC then you will end up like this girl and the thought wil never leave your mind.

Now I am going to analyse this advert according to their Technical, Written and Symbolic codes. Firstly, a use from the technical code is the camera angle, the camera angle here is a close up, this is done so that the main focus is on the girl who has been abused. Another code is the framing of the advert, the advert is cropped so you can only see her face, this is done to make the audience feel like she is trapped because she has been abused and this will happen to us, trapped and scared to tell anyone. Another technical code is the juxtaposition. The juxtaposition of this advert is that young girls are normally perceived as innocent and they should be treated with the most of respect, but in this case this girl has not been as is being abused. Lastly, the lighting in this advert is very interesting as half of her face is illuminated by light, meanwhile her other side is covered with shadow, by half of her face being illuminated by light, this gives the impression that there is still hope for her and help can come from the NSPCC.

Secondly, a use from the written code is the headline 'When you cant talk about abuse, talk to us' immediately they are telling us to contact them if we (the audience) are being abused. The advert does this several times and uses repetition throughout the advert telling us to contact them, examples are on the phone or their website. Another use from the written code is captions. Here the girl has a mute symbol covering her mouth, this is a symbol of her inability to talk about her being being abused. This can have several connotations as people can see this as someone else muting her ability to tell the truth and find help. Another way it can be taken is that she is scared to talk about it because she might of been threatened by her abuser not to tell anyone.

Thirdly, a use from the symbolic code is the girl's body language. You can see by looking at her that she is genuinely scared for her life and you can see how it is affecting her because her eyes are wide open, the girl might have trouble sleeping because of this problem. Another use is the colour, half of her face is pale and half is shadowed, this tells us that there is still hope for her on one side even though on the other side she is scared and upset.

Overall, the point the advert is trying to make is that if you have been abused in the past or are still being abused, then you desperately need to contact the NSPCC to find a way around helping the problem, otherwise it will never stop.
