Film Trailer Genre Analysis

The trailer I have chosen to genre analyse is 'The Jungle Book'.

In the beginning of the trailer, we are shown the setting. This setting is a jungle and this primarily suggests that animals along with insects are the main characters of this film. At 00:13 dialog is used, 'Are you alone out here, What are you doing out here in the jungle'. This suggests that there are two characters, the one talking and the one who is being talked to. Though we do not know whether they are human, creature or animal, we have an understanding that is film is in the genre of fantasy due to the mystical and magical soundtrack featured. At 00:28 we see a tiger roaring fearlessly, now linking this is humans, this raises the question, why would humans be in the jungle around such wild animals? so this leads to the conclusion that maybe the dialog belongs to an animal, which also supports the fact that this film fits in the genre of fantasy. During the trailer, a mid shot of a baby is shown and its raising its hand towards a panther. In reality this would never happen, a baby would not be left or born in a 'magical' jungle. The animals do not act like their primeval or natural selves. A lion and a panther fight as the panther tries to protect this little boy which in reality would never happen. The story of this film can only happen in a fairy tale which is why this film is a genre of fantasy.

In the trailer, it shows talking wild animals and a little boy. We have no idea how this little boy turned up and we never find out. This adds to the fantasy effect, this little boy is raised by animals and is treated like one. This world he lives in is magical, and is typical of a fantasy film, a mystic world that inhibits talking creatures and animals.

The binary oppositions that stood out to me were:
Reality VS myth and legend
Love VS hate
Community VS isolation

The director, Jon Favoreau has directed other films such as Iron man 3, Elf and Pirates of the  Caribbean. although these are not typically fantasy he has worked with Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 3 who stars in this film as 'Kaa' the snake. Scarlett's general acting carrier does not revolve around fantasy, she stars in more of the adventure, action movies.
