Genre-Pride

The genre of pride is a comedy, drama hybrid; there is just about as much drama as there is comedy.
A dramatic scene for this film would be the scene the girl gets up and starts singing Bread and Roses which is a song that connects with the miners.  This scene is dramatic because it’s everyone singing together and it shows that they are a community and that they all support each other and the song is significant to the situation they re facing. By singing this song it creates emotions within the audience such as sadness and sympathy for what the miners are going through.  The sound of the singing, the volume of it builds to a crescendo, it starts from an acapella from one single person to a collective, this re-enforces the theme of unity, a group of diverse people coming together for the same cause.  The diegetic singing is joined by the non-diegetic music, such as the brass band, which also has connotations of marching and mining communities.  This reinforces the theme that a group can be stronger together than when it’s apart.

Also the Speech is also a dramatic scene because it’s sought of acting as a rally cry, the defiance of Mark’s character shows that he wont stop until he gets what he wants which is to raise as much money and awareness for the miner as possible.  The opening shot is of Mark which is tracking forward, it’s a long take which lasts about 7-8 seconds which implies that he is in deep thought because he is quiet and his eyes are darting all around the room, not settling on anything in particular. He is thinking about a plan to raise more money for the miners. In this scene he seems separate from others because the background is out of focus. By having the scene set out like this we can anticipate that something is about to happen from the slow movement of the camera. There is a break in tension by Heffina’s comic line “get you feet of the chair” which reminds the audience of the authenticity of the film, it is a film based on reality even if it has been dramatized.

A comedy scene would be the one where Heffina it telling a miner to interact and mingle with the gays and lesbian: Hefina: "What in the hell do you think you're doing? Get out there and find a gay or a lesbian right now!"
Miner: "I don't want to give them the wrong impression."
Hefina: "Right, cause you're so bloody irresistible!"
This signifies that the miners didn’t want to interact with the gays incase they thought they were gay, this just shows how dramatized this film is because this claim is so over the top that its humorous. By having this break in the drama refreshes the audience and they remember that it is also a comedy movie and even though there are serious scenes to the movie it is put a cross in a funny way because people are more likely to remember it if its funny.
