Representation of Paul Hollywood

Text 1: Online article from The Express (2013)
This article was written a couple of months after the news of Paul Hollywood's affair was made public. It shows him looking quite menacing, and arrogant, traits that aren't usually associated with bakers. his eyes are narrowed, and staring straight into the lens of the camera, this implies that he is quite sly and calculating, engaging with audience yet making them feel quite uncomfortable. He is also smirking slightly, which portrays his cockiness and makes him appear smug. Hollywood also appears to be relaxed, as if he has just sat down after some hard work. The top few buttons of his shirt are undone, and his sleeves appear to be rolled up suggesting that he is determined and hard working.

The Encoder of the text in this case is the journalist and editors of The Express online as well as the photographer who represent Hollywood as heartless and selfish. They combine Hollywoods work life and private life in order to portray him as a workaholic- who's entire life revolves around baking. The medium shot, and fact that he is looking straight into the camera suggests that he is very egotistical, self-centred man who is arrogant which is emphasised by the phrase, "piercing blue eyes" which adds a threatening tone to it. Hollywood fills the majority of the frame which again reinforces his importance and cockiness. The repetition of the phrase "no guilt" in both the main body of text and the headline which implies that he is heartless and ignorant.
