Research and Analyse a specific Genre of TV Shows

Soap Opera

Soap Operas always tend to broadcast continually. An example of this is Eastenders, which has continually broadcasted on BBC 1 for the past 31 Years. With the first episode being broadcasted in 1985. Eastenders tends to be broadcasted around 7PM and a rerun on BBC 3 at 10 pm.

Opening Sequence

I have chosen to analyse the opening sequence of Coronation Street. The visuals in this opening sequence show us the setting the show. Showing many angles of the famous 'Coronation Street", during the opening sequence it also has the Coronation Street theme tune on it, which has been the same since the show first aired back in the 1960s. This is good as it prepares us for the show due, to the theme tune being massively recognised. Therefore as soon as anyone hears that theme tune they will automatically think of Coronation Street. The editing on the opening sequence is slow, with each clip being at least a few seconds left. All shots are similar, with every shot having an object in focus and something happening in the background which is out of focus. i also notices that on each of the shots the camera tracks either to the right or to the right slightly and then upwards.

Setting

Settings which are usually typical of soap operas, are settings such as residential areas, where drama is expected. We usually see characters interact with each other in all areas of the set. Whether this would be in the home of a character, in the local shop/market or either in the local pub. All most every soap opera will have characters interacting in these 3 settings  The 3 main soap operas in the United Kingdom are Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. With Coronation Street and Eastenders being set in urban environments and Emmerdale being set in a small village in the countryside of Britain. Yes, soap operas are set in studios or sets. It may not seem like they are however, the houses in the residential houses there that the audience see are not real houses, and the filming isn't done in the houses, it is done on a set. Also the sets in these soap operas look like very normal residential areas, but in reality it is all a set.

Eastenders Filming on Set

Reinforcing my point that Emmerdale is set in the countryside
