Research and Analyse a specific Genre of TV Shows

Soap Opera

Soap Operas always tend to broadcast continually. An example of this is Eastenders, which has continually broadcasted on BBC 1 for the past 31 Years. With the first episode being broadcasted in 1985. Eastenders tends to be broadcasted around 7PM and a rerun on BBC 3 at 10 pm.

Opening Sequence

I have chosen to analyse the opening sequence of Coronation Street. The visuals in this opening sequence show us the setting the show. Showing many angles of the famous 'Coronation Street", during the opening sequence it also has the Coronation Street theme tune on it, which has been the same since the show first aired back in the 1960s. This is good as it prepares us for the show due, to the theme tune being massively recognised. Therefore as soon as anyone hears that theme tune they will automatically think of Coronation Street. The editing on the opening sequence is slow, with each clip being at least a few seconds left. All shots are similar, with every shot having an object in focus and something happening in the background which is out of focus. i also notices that on each of the shots the camera tracks either to the right or to the right slightly and then upwards.

Setting

Settings which are usually typical of soap operas, are settings such as residential areas, where drama is expected. We usually see characters interact with each other in all areas of the set. Whether this would be in the home of a character, in the local shop/market or either in the local pub. All most every soap opera will have characters interacting in these 3 settings  The 3 main soap operas in the United Kingdom are Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. With Coronation Street and Eastenders being set in urban environments and Emmerdale being set in a small village in the countryside of Britain. Yes, soap operas are set in studios or sets. It may not seem like they are however, the houses in the residential houses there that the audience see are not real houses, and the filming isn't done in the houses, it is done on a set. Also the sets in these soap operas look like very normal residential areas, but in reality it is all a set.

Eastenders Filming on Set

Reinforcing my point that Emmerdale is set in the countryside

Representation of Celebrity - Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Text 1

Representations of Justin Bieber, in the
media texts above is that they represent him to be a reckless teen who is always doing stupid things. I say this as in this article, they say ''Justin Bieber has pulled yet another Justin Bieber'' this implies he is always doing stupid things and and it no surprise to everyone that he is getting arrested. Representing him to be a nuisance to the police and always causing trouble. We also see in the article that they have put a side bar in where it will take you to another page, this is called "Justin Bieber's Wild Decline" this representing him to be a declining person. This was all down to the selection by the encoder. The encoder has put this sidebar here as everyone who see's it will be already reading his article about him getting arrested for assault and dangerous driving, meaning that when they click on the 'Wild decline timeline'' it will give more of a reason to the audience to think negative things about Bieber.

The encoders of this article are the photographers and the editors. The way in which the photographers have encoded this is they have photographed him when he was being escorted by the police, this may give a negative outlook on Bieber as they are representing him to be a criminal.

Text 2

In this article is talks about Justin Bieber when he donated $545,000 to a charity which researches HIV/AIDS. The representations the audience will gather from this media text from the encoders, are that Bieber is a man of wealth and generosity. I say this as many celebrities usually do not donate a substantial amount of  money like this, so by him donating this will change his representation as many people may have had a negative representation of Bieber, but now that they see his doing good things and not getting on the wrong side of the law. Also in the photograph of Bieber, he looks mature and developed. This can represent him to no longer be immature and childish

Text 3

In this magazine cover by Rolling Stone, the encoders show Bieber's 'bad boy reputation' by emphasising the word 'BAD BOY' this represents Bieber to not be having in the standards that is expected of him, also it says on the advert, 'Why Justin Bieber won't grow up. This can represent him to still act immaturely, and not like an adult which is expected of him, Also so we see in his stnance in the photo, the encoder (Photographer) has decided to take a picture of Justin when he is doing an inappropriate can once again represent him to be naïve and immature. However we still see that it says 'Justin Bieber - Road To Fame' 'This can portray Bieber to be a very talented young man, and is a very popular person.

Print Based Charity Advert

Lines of Appeal:
Lines of appeal used in this print based advert by Barnardos, is from Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The need that can relate most to this advert in my eyes is the need for love and belonging. I say this because in the need for love and belonging it requires being part of a family, and it seems to me in this advert that this baby does not. The text on it also says 'please don't turn me away'' implying this baby is looking for a family. Also we see it says ''He needs us, We need you'' this may suggest that without the help of the public, Barnardos will be unable to help children in need.  This may be classed as value message, as the advertiser is persuading you to think that the advert is undeniable, in this case you can nit argue against the fact that without the help from public donations, Barnardos wouldn't have been able to help millions of children, like this on the this advertisement.

GLAMOUR Magazine
In this magazine from GLAMOUR, the masthead is in hot pink, suggesting the readers of this will be women. At the top of the magazine it says ''BRITAIN'S NO.1 WOMEN'S MAGAZINE'' This is suggesting that the magazine is of a high prestige and is of a high standard. The masthead is also very bold and as it is capitalised it will make the reader know that the magazine is all about looking good, and impressing others. The Audience of Glamour Magazine would be of The Aspirer as it values style over substance.

The main image of the magazine is of a medium close up, due to only being able to see the models body from the knees upwards. Also a direct mode of address is used in this advert, we know this as the model in the picture appears to be staring directly at the audience of the magazine. The models head is covering the M if the word GLAMOUR on the masthead of the magazine, this is is suggesting that the magazine is that well known, people are able t recognise it is that Magazine even when part of the masthead is covered. The way the model is standing is almost as if she has done something mischievous, this connotes with the copy of the magazine, where it says ''Did Anna Kendrick REALLY say that?!" Suggesting that Anna Kendrick has said something wrong or mischievous.

Everything works together from a visual perspective on this magazine cover as the way the copy at the side of the model is set out, it merely covers any of the models body, this is great from a visual perspective as it does not give the feel of the cover of the magazine a cluttered feel, as this may deter readers as it can look unprofessional, which is definitely what GLAMOUR magazine is not about. We ow this as the word glamour is signifies about possible looking good, and being stylish. So having a stylish cover resembles the meaning behind the company. The theme of the magazine is about summer, so they are going to advertise and emphasise that summer is near, they do this as they know the readers of the magazine are woman, and typically many women like buying summer clothes, ''499 wardrobe treats inside'' the emphasis of the ''499'shows the wide range of the clothes they sell.

Devices used to draw the audience to the magazine is the emphasis of ''SUMMER'' the word is capitalised and a different colour the rest of the sentence. They do this as it makes the word stand out, attracting people who are interested in summer.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009) - Director, Roger Ebert.

Law Abiding Citizen is a film about a man whose wife and daughter are murdered in a horrific attack, he seeks revenge and dedicates his life to making the killers of his family a misery, however he does not only make the killers a target but the people who did not give the killers enough justice.

The film is a cross genre between, Crime and Thriller.

It provides the audience with the Binary Opposition of Good vs Evil, this is when he is determined to get revenge for the evil acts carried out on his wife and daughter.  This shown when he has Derby strapped to the table. This is signifying that he has waited a long time to get his revenge when he says ''Your heart is beating so fast. Mine too."

In the trailer there are many cut shots, an example of this is when he sees the killer of his family shaking hands with the man who was supposed to be bring justice to his family, we see him looking at them then it cuts to him walking away, then cuts again to where he is further away. the camera does not move, this may represent the distance he feels with the prosecutor, as he feels he has not brought enough justice, also just in this scene there numerous camera shots, these are medium close up and very long shot. When Clyde is duct taped across the mouth we have an extreme close up of his face, we see he is in pain and can only see his face, signifying that he is trapped and cannot do anything to help them. The music used in this trailer is of an epic style. It is very fast paced when the trailer is fast paced, but when something bad is about to happen it suddenly stops, this emphasises the action going on in the movie. The setting of the trailer varies, however mainly being set either in a court or prison. We know this as a lot of the people in the scenes are wearing suits, implying they are by means playing an important role. We also know it is set in a prison as Clyde’s uniform is a prison uniform, we do not have to be told he is in prison as we can clearly see in the background of some of the scenes metal bars, and security guards. Also in the scene where Nick is interrogating Clyde, we see the use of over the shoulder shots, it switches between the two as they speak so when Clyde speaks we see him over the shoulder of Nick and vice versa. The use of shot/reverse shot is also used as the relationship between nick and Clyde is building up to be bad. The final 3/4 of the trailer becomes very fast paced with lots of different scenes in a short period of time. This is called a montage. A montage is a good way of revealing a back story and also it shows the progression of the movie in a very short period of time, the montage ended also with 'epic' music. We see the use of voice over in the film, however the voice over is Gerard’s voice and is voiced over a scene for a few seconds, then it switches to the actual scene he is talking in. This is good as it can prepare us
for what we are going to see. The use of enigma codes is used in the film, when the trailer first starts, when we see Clyde first open the door and he hit over the head with a baseball bat and when he is tied, this makes us question, what has he done to be in that position?  An action code used in the film, is when Clyde first sees Nick shaking hand with derby, the action code is used as, as soon as he sees them the music stops and suddenly changes and slowly progressing faster and faster.

Tom Kenyon.

Tom Kenyon ''Straight Outta Compton'' (2015)

The target audience in my opinion is the succeeder, i think this because the band NWA always wanted to succeed, and the film is based around their lives and how they were once one o the best Hip Hop bands all of al time.

Preferred reading
They have a very sympathetic way towards the people in the film (NWA) were treated, the preferred reason would've saw past their 'gangster' personality, even though they were often discriminated by the police. I think the racial hatred for black in the film from the police, was another factor contributing to people being sympathetic with them. The message of the film is that no matter your background, you can always achieve something if you work hard, i thin this can relate back to anyone as if you look at very successful peoples background, usually they have came from nothing or was once just an average person, but they worked hard and succeeded.

Oppositional reading

An oppositional reading would have people who have recognised the preferred reading, but ultimately decides to reject it. The way in which they would reject would be that, they will not feel the sympathy that the preferred readers would feel, as they may think they brought it upon themselves to live the way they did. Peoples cultural experiences may lead them to think this because they may have grown up in an area where gang related violence and the oppositional readers of Straight Outta Compton may think that NWA are just like that.

FIFA 16 Demo Review

In the FIFA 16 demo, you get to choose from Chelsea FC, Manchester City, Inter and a few others. The women’s teams included in the demo are USA and Germany. EA Sports wastes no time getting you into a game. After the demo finished loading, I was immediately thrown into playing an El Classico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. After playing the first game, I immediately set up a second game with the women’s team, as I really wanted to test out the new feature added in by EA Sports, during this game I noticed they have added a new feature, which is the vanishing spray, it is almost exactly like real life, taking a few minutes to fade into the pitch and is still there even after the free kick had been taken, a very nice touch from EA Sports.

As always with the game’s opening, Martin Tyler and Alan Smith provide the commentary and it was nice to hear the duo get a little more in depth with some of the players, but this has been one of EA Sport’s cornerstones, so improving the commentary was unsurprising. However I am worried that after a few months after the official game has come out, how many time will we have heard the same facts about the same player? I feel it will be too many times.

As for the graphics – In my honest opinion the graphics have barely changed since FIFA 15, but this only the demo and not the final release of the game, so the graphics may be better on the final release of the game. One thing I did notice though was the cinematics of the game, they looked a lot more sharp and crisp than FIFA 15. On the other hand, player faces look fantastic and much more defined, also the addition of tattoos on the game, makes the game feel just that little bit more realistic, however I have only seen Lionel Messi with a tattoo so I am assuming he is the only player on the game with his real life tattoo. The stadiums, as always, look great and it seems that EA Sports has got the crowd shots appearing more realistic as opposed to the previous robotic movements. Some of the lighting is also better.
One big improvement that I noticed is the slide-tackle animations.  EA Sports stated that they were trying to improve them so we wouldn’t see so many canned animations. They were correct but the collision detection for the demo is a mess.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the demo but there is no question about it that there is still some room for improvement such as the gameplay speed and that there should be a wider variety of stadiums to play in, also there are still some glaring issues with the AI that have still not been addressed.
