Some texts were fairly explicit with exactly how they felt about the games starting - however we learn a lot about what they think of the Olympics means to the Mail through their choice of images...
The front page of the Daily Mail shows the overall enthusiasm the Olympics Games brings to Britain, especially since it was in our country in 2012. The main image emphasises this as it shows common people outside of 10 Downing Street holding their Great Britain flags, being very patriotic in the process. Being the everyday person outside could signify that the Games is for everyone to enjoy, even the person holding the torch isn't any particular celebrity, further emphasising this notion of anyone can be apart of the Olympics. There is plenty of British iconography used in the image such as 10 Downing Street being the background along with former prime minister David Cameron in which could suggest that no matter what social class, it can be celebrated with anyone. Overall, this representation of the London 2012 Olympics is rather positive as it shows Britain as a community no matter the social context.
The front cover of the daily mail represents the olympics as being a very proud time for Great Britain, this is shown by the image on the cover. A lot of people have hold of the British flag, this makes the advert seem almost patriotic. It also involves British iconography as the image is taken from Downing street and in the background we see 10 Downing street with David Cameron in the background. The image also suggests that the olympics brings everyone together as we see David Cameron standing next to ordinary people who are celebrating with the torch. This also shows that the olympics is for everyone as we have people of different statuses in the same image celebrating the same thing. Overall, the front cover represents the olympics as having a sense of community as it brings everybody together and is something everybody can celebrate
This front cover for the Daily Mail aims to represent Britain as patriotic. I would say this because we can clearly see that the british flag is a dominant feature of the image, held up by ordinary people around 10 downing street, along with David Cameron and his wife. This represents how Britain is patriotic because it suggests that no matter who you are, and your political views, we will all come together to celebrate an event such as the Olympics. The cover also shows britain of to be an otimistic nation, because everyone is seen to be smiling and celebrating, whilst the bright lightning also gives this connotation. The fact that the image focuses on an older member of the public holding the torch could also represent Britain as a traditional and respectful nation. The headline 'Greatest Show On Earth' creates meaning for the audience, because despite the fact that there is no mention of Britain or the Olympics, we associate the patriotic image with the headline, which then emphasises Britains optimism, because we can associate the words 'Greatest' with the image, and the representation of Britain.
The front cover for the daily mail represents the olympics as a time of fun and enjoyment, most notably due to the heavy use of colours that bombard the image. However, a lot of this colour stems from the flag which may connote a sense of multiculturalism and how we as a country are very dynamic. The use of 10 Downing Street as iconography serves the image well as it is a very recognisable place and it is very distinct to Britain which gives connotations of pride in country. The use of David Cameron in this image could also be said as a symbol of unity as he is the leader of the country, stood near average people, sharing a celebration with them. This enforces the idea that sport creates a meritocracy in which all things such as class are completely disregarded but our achievements and our abilities are what makes us stand out which is also reinforced by the fact that the subject of the image is the torch bearer and not David Cameron.
The Daily Mail cover shows how proud Britain is to have the Olympic games and that it is in safe hands. The image used shows the torch being carried through the streets which are surrounded by supporters of the games. they are there with the Union flags watching the famous torch getting closer to the magnificent stadium. It focuses on how the nation is coming together for the games to all celebrate together. There are people of many ages who have come to see the torch. It doesn't matter how old you are, you can still take part in the celebration of the games. The fact that the image is taken outside of 10 Downing Street shows that it doesn't matter who you are and how high up you are in the country. It is everyones games and you don't need to be of a higher class to join in. The ordinary people can unite with the people who are higher up in the country and come together. The games are the same for everyone. No matter who you are and what your background. The article is very positive with its use of colour and headline, "Greatest show on Earth begins". There is also competitions to get people involved in the games. For example, win £10,000 with the free pull out poster that comes with the paper. Anyone can take part in the game. Normal people from normal backgrounds can compete in the games. This is shown through the article because of all of the ordinary people who are supporting the games. Having an iconic figure like David Cameron with them shows this.
