Equilbrium Review

Equilibrium review

Recently after re-watching this at what almost seems as a budget version of "The Matrix" I see why younger me may have enjoyed this without a clue of understanding the plot, purely due to the action scenes spread throughout.

-Plot
Equilibrium, set in the futuristic dystopian setting of Libria, tells the tail of John Preston (Played by Christian Bale) a high ranking cleric of the fascistic government that rules of Libria. To ensure no issues with political ruling; all emotions, whether anger, sadness or even happiness, are to be handled with regular doses of the suppressant known as Prozium. To further ensure this ruling, any emotion shown labels them as a "sense offender" and is prone to being shot on the spot or further on being incinerated. Bit extreme. However, what mainly draws John into this dilemma is Mary O'Brien (Played by Emily Watson) rebel attitude to which gives John the realisation of the situation, making him consider joining the resistance. Further enhancing this realisation is the eyes of a puppy. Yes, a puppy, not his wife being sent to the incinerator for her being a sense offender; I guess puppy dog eyes really do work.

-Camera work
However, as I've said this seems like a budget "The Matrix" this shouldn't discredit the well-choreographed fight scenes giving the movie a more "gun-wu" feel which isn't the worst idea. Furthermore, Wimmer's (director) blue-grey cinematography fits right in with everything being suppressed also drawing similarities to the The Wizard of Oz (1939) especially as anything showing some freedom/authenticity replaces the blue-grey for more saturated warm colours.

If you personally love original ideas for movies I wouldn't recommend this for you however, if you curious at "what if..." then would suggest that it is worth the watch and or thought of it. Even so, if you simply like well done choreography, again, another recommendation.
