Gossip Girl
This media text appears to be mainstream because it focuses on drama and romance therefore it could be considered as a teen romance. This appeals to the mainstreamers because it is a well-known American TV show so it is most likely to be watched by the majority. This could also be considered to be mainstream because it is relatable, us watchers can see a clear divide between the higher and lower class and this happens in our day to day lives. In addition, Gossip Girl focuses on the class and status because the characters are portrayed to attend a private school. These teens have rich parents, it is clear that they get what they want whenever they want it. This could connect with an audience of aspirers because people watch the show due to their want to be like the characters. They want to be spoiled and rich and get everything they want just like Blair, Serena, Nate and Chuck do. However, some may disagree with this because the show sends across a negative message which suggests that money cannot buy happiness. The rich parents are shown to almost neglect their children's needs; they push them to get the best out of life even when it’s not their child's dream. To conclude, it doesn’t appeal to the succeeders because it doesn't give the audience control and it is not aimed for explorers because the show has a sense of normality therefore there are no new discoveries to be made. Overall, I would say Gossip Girl is mainly aimed at mainstreamers due to its ordinariness, each episode intertwines therefore there is lack of change. This is ideal for mainstreamers because as it offers similar entertainment.
