Active and Passive | Homework

1. Two theories which are associated with the effects debate are the desensitation model and the sensitation model. The desensitation model is when an audience repeatedly watch horror or violent films for example, which then allows them to become used to the terrifying, scary scenes in the films such as, The Conjuring, Insidious and War Of The Worlds. Having exposure to this type of media for a long period of time will make audiences more immune to the piece of media which leads to a low reaction to shock for example, if the watcher is repeatedly consuming this type of media it will effect how they see bad things going on in the world such as, shocking news broadcasted. On the other hand , the sensitation model is the opposite of the desensitation model as it takes a different approach for example, people who consume media text such as, horror films would be more weary about situations  and be more conscience about people around them.

2. An active audience reception is when the audience activity engages with what the media text is about. They will question and see which ways they will interpreted the text they do this by basing it on life experiences so if a text is talking about something related to you then you could take a
different approach to someone who has not had that life experience so cannot relate to the text as well. For example, people who take an active audience response will watch a makeup tutorial on YouTube and engage and respond to what they are watching they will challenge and form different view points. Where as passive audience reception would watch the makeup tutorial and take it for what it is a video to learn how to do makeup so they follow the aim and what the intentions of the media text intended to do.

3. I don't think audiences can fully blame violence on media as people have their own conscience and know better than to repeat on things they see in the media such as, video games, tv shows and films. However, I do believe that it reinforces people's views on wanting to commit violence. On the other hand, people who consume violent media and don't commit violence are a prime example, so I don't think violent media influences consumers behaviour to an extent.

4. Personally, I believe that active audience theories are more acceptable than passive audiences because active tends to focus more on the individuality on each person however, passive audiences tend to focus on the original intentions of he media text they don't explore other meanings or aspects. Passive audiences don't tend to consider individuals they would like to see everyone under the same label, they want everyone to have the same response over a media text. Another reason why I think that active is more accurate is because of the 4c's because people can fall under more than one catorgary so it shows we are all different and have different reactions to things.

5. The media text I have chosen is match.com as I feel like many people take different view points on the media text.

Preferred Reading

I would say the preferred reading for this website is to find new people romantically or friendly it is seen as a place where you can socialise meet new friends and parteners. They go by their slogan "if you don't like your imperfections someone else will", so this is promoting that everyone can find a partner if they went on Match.com and there is something for everyone. It shows how

Oppositional Reading

However, other people will take this advert negatively as they may think meeting people online is dangerous and they might not think meeting strangers online is safe. They may see it as dating being a chore something everyone has to do. However, there will be women and men out there who are happy being alone and see this as artificial or forced.
