Reception Theory: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

The Target Audience

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic's target demographic is 4-12 Year old girls but the series has developed a rather large fan base of adults as well as children. The term "Brony" (Plural Bronies) is used to describe older fans, mainly male but occasionally females as well that are outside the series' Target Audience.

Preferred Reading

The show has many messages to help kids and sometimes adults understand some of the key components of being a genuine person. In the opening alone it gets plenty points across. One of the biggest ideologies in the series and this opening is that friendship is important. This is a generic concept in most children's TV shows, but this also has a big ideological point of not discriminating against others because of their personality or ethnicity as the characters vary massively and have many different range of people in the cast. It also has a underlining message of a developing connections with everyone you can, no matter how different they are.

Oppositional Reading

People might see the messages as not important, people who aren't very social would agree with the point but not do it themselves because they dislike situations like this. This might be because of bad experiences themselves with it, but this might not affect the children as this concept of friends and such is much newer. As much as it isn't a common thing, you could also have people who are quite discriminatory towards other ethnicities or religions might totally disagree with these points and not want there kids to see the world as a fair environment for everyone and everything really.
