Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus (Music Video Research 2)

Artist: Billy Ray Cyrus.
Track: Achy Breaky Heart.
Genre: Country.

Visual style/Mise-en-scene:
During this music video, multiple different shots are used throughout, including a lot of close ups of the singer lip-syncing to the track. They also overlay two shots at once at multiple parts of the video which sometimes meant that we could see the audience at the concert and the singer singing at the same time and sometimes meant that we could see two different angles of the singer at the same time. The pace of the music video matches the pace of the track and lyrics.

Narrative:
At the beginning of the video, we see the singer getting out of his car and then being surrounded by excited fans before he enters his concert. As soon as he enters the concert, the track begins. The rest of the music video focuses on one location and activity which is a concert at which Billy Ray Cyrus is singing. Throughout the video, we see a lot of lip-syncing by the singer and we also see the crowd singing along. There are also parts where the crowd are line dancing which corresponds with the country genre of the song.

Conventional/Unconventional:
The music video shows typical conventions of music videos such as a lot of lip-syncing by the artist  and a concert scene however, a lot of music videos have more than just one scene and/or activity going on which this one does not. This makes the music video unique however not in a way that most people would enjoy as it can get quite boring. The music video includes a crowd dancing in a group which can be seen in a lot of other music videos by other artists.

What works/ What doesn't:
What works in this music video is that the shots are constantly changing throughout. It sometimes goes from an extreme close up (ECU) to a long shot or from a long shot to a medium long shot. Because of the variety in shots, the audience stay interested throughout. Despite this, because there is only on theme (the concert), the audience may become bored as they may wan't/expect it to change. What also works in this video is when they overlay two different shots. This works as it allows the audience to see two different things at once or the same thing from two different perspectives.

  1. The close ups could be used to show that he is the focus of the video. At parts there are low angle shots taken which shows the artist is dominating over the audience and it can also be seen from the perspective of them looking up at him which could indicate his importance.
I would say that the conventions of the video are quite typical in the sense the he is playing a guitar which is seen a lot on country videos as it is probably the main instrument that is used.

  2. The use of the visuals at the start when no music is playing reinforces that he is an important person that people look up too.
