conventions and miss-en-scene for the fantasy genre

conventions:

  • they tend to have a positive outcome/happy ending
  • rather simplistic narrative (i.e. the good guys have to journey across the land to find an item and defeat the great evil)
  • take place in fictional worlds and universes
  • often includes supernatural elements such as magic or mythical creatures
  • it is about the hero's journey, a single character grows throughout the story with the help of a mentor figure

the lord of the ring's films conform to the general conventions of fantasy. at the end of the third film the great evil is defeated, the narrative doesn't divert from this formula and it takes place in the fictional world of middle earth with the inclusion of magic and mythical creatures.
