Music Video research | Heavy metal

Artist: System of A down
Song: Chop Suey

Visual style/Mise en scene
The video starts off with a zoom shot which reveals the audience. We then see a High angle shot used which also zooms out to reveal the man playing the drums. Fast pace editing is used which matches the speed of the video/music itself. As well as, a zoom shot being used to reveal a close up of the member playing a guitar, his facial expression looks angry which is generic as so do most people in heavy metal videos. The music speeds up while this is happening as the crowd are jumping and going wild as well as the band. A lot of medium long shots are used to show the band when he builds up to the shouting of "Die" the pace of the video goes faster this could have been used to present the adrenaline that had been build up.

Visual Narrative/techniques
As we can expect with a heavy metal video a series of props are used such as, guitars drums etc. This is typical of a heavy metal video as they are the main instruments that are used most. The visual aspects of the band use that stereotypical image of metal bands the undone, tattooed, black smudged makeup and messy hair. The use of camera angles in this video makes us as an audience feel as if we are experiencing this concert with the band, which is good for fans of the fans of the band as it makes it more personal. I interpret a sadness or loss in the video when they say "angels deserve to die" the soft tone of the music at this time makes it emotional.

Conventional/Unconventional
I would say that this video is conventional for the genre it is as most if not all heavy metal is presented in the way for example, the over the top body language and singing. It is also conventional in the sense of the performance to the camera as the is seen in most music videos. The video can also be unconventional because I don't think the narrative of the song matches to the video. I don't see a connection with the two.

What works/what doesn't
At the start of the video the spotlights at the top of the stage flicker in time with the music. Also when the bad are singing along to the music they are singing in sync so this shows good editing skills.
