Treat you better- Shawn Mendes
Narrative
The story is about a girl and a boy who are in a relationship however it's not a typical love story as the relationship is rather abusive. It shows multiple brawls between the two including the boy shoving the girl and waiting in the background it another boy (Shawn Mendes) who wants to treat her better. There are many close up shots on the girl, this is to show the emotion in her eyes. The tension builds in the music video as it shows the boy getting in a fight with another boy who we know nothing about and haven't been introduced too. It then shows the girl trying to stop the fight and getting hurt in the process. Throughout all of the abusive situations it shows how Mendes wants to be with her. At the end of the video it displays the number for the national domestic violence hotline.
Conventional/Unconventional
I think that the music video conveys both convention and unconventional themes as it has a typical love triangle story, with a boy wanting to be with a girl but she's already in a relationship however there are unconventional themes to the music video, for example the relationship is abusive which you don't see in many music videos, I think this is a good idea as it brings to light the abuse that can go on in relationships and gives people a chance to get help by giving them someone to talk to and putting a phone number as the end for people to call and not feel alone. Another unconventional part of the music video is that the good boy doesn't get the girl instead she stays with the abusive one whereas if it was conventional the good boy would have ended up with the girl.
Visuals
The mise-en-scene shows 3 people's lives and the camera quickly jumps from person to person. There are also a lot of close up shots of the girls eyes. When the boy is having a fight there a long angle shows, this it to show the audience everything that is going on.
What works/ what doesn't
I think what works with the music video is the abusive relationship, I think they show it in an emotional yet respectful way. I think what doesn't work, in my opinion, is the fact that there is no particular ending. We don't find out if she ends up breaking up with the boy, on the other hand you could say this does work as it leaves it up to the audience to assume what's happened and they can make up there own ending. This makes the music video more intimate with the audience and makes them feel more involved.
