Music Video research | RnB

Artist: TLC
Song: No Scrubs

Visual style/Mise en scene
The video starts off dark however, bright lights are shone. We cannot see the groups face until the main lights are put on fully. There are quick cuts between each shot which creates the build up of the appearances of each artist. A lot of high angle shots are used in the video as I think these types of shot are most flattering however, when they get into the song and say "No, I don't want no scrubs" the camera changes to a low angle shot which gives the audience the sense they are dominating.

Narrative including techniques used
This music video is presenting women basically saying they don't want a man that will walk all over them and expect everything done for them. The strong presentation of women in this shows how they wont stand for second best as it presents women dominating. It relates to the ideology of feminism and how both sexes should be equal as there are three women representing themselves and for other women. The song is empowering and it reinforces the theme of independence and not having to rely on other people.

Conventional/unconventional
This video was released in 1999 at this time I think that 'Girl Power' was a big thing as we had girl groups such as, The Spice Girls who were huge and represented girl power so I think it was quite conventional for the year it was brought out as it was a topic that was very popular then. As well as, the generic dance in the video it was kind popular at the time as it was very structured.

What works/what doesn't?
I think the tempo and music in the video all work as everything seems to be in sync. I would say that even though this is a very popular song if it was to be released in 2016 I think people would see it as maybe a bit strange as this type of structure of music videos doesn't tend to be as popular now. Also, I feel that some dialect in the video is hard to understand they use a few colloquialisms which people who are not familiar with this dialect will find it harder to understand as its not as straight forward as other lyrics.
