Music Video research | Hip Hop
Artist: Eminem
Song: When I'm Gone
Visual Style/Mise en scene
The video starts of quite dark, deep and grungy looking. The camera angles tend to be a view of the artist so either someone is watching him or he is speaking to the camera. When his daughter is on the swing it is in slow motion and the lighting is soft which could indicate a memory or flashback. Also when him and the girl playing his daughter are speaking at one point a low angle shot is used as his daughter is looking down on him almost, this could be presented two ways by his daughters disappointment in him or it could mean he is looking up at her wanting to make her proud.
Narrative including techniques used
I think the main aim of the music video is to tell the story of the binary opposition Family V Career but the video leaves us with enigma codes such as, Will he say with his family or pursue his career? However, there is a conflict as there are aspects that he pursuing his career for his family. The story is portrayed in a clever way as the video shows his struggles which makes the video very personal so when his fans are watching he video it will make them feel involved almost. We are also seeing vulnerability from the artist as he is admitting his mistakes and his problems with the world which signifies that nobody is perfect even big artists like him, we all face are own problems and conflicts that can be overcame. The story is being told from his point of view which creates the sense of involvement. I also think it is being shown through is daughter which makes the audience connect more with the song as it is a child's problem as well.
Conventional/Unconventional
This music video in my opinion is very conventional as the story told in it is based on real life I think that the acting in the video through out is very believable and it makes us feel it happened. I don't think the video is not unconventional in my opinion as it shows a part of someone's life.
What works/What doesn't?
I'm the video I would say the context is very believable and it works as it shows his relationship with his daughter it gives the audience an insight of what his life is like and what he has went through however, I feel as if that it is believable until the point where his daughter followed him to his show as it's not likely a child would have got there alone despite, it meaning that he is seeing her as he knows he's lied to her and feels guilt I find it less conventional when this part starts to play.
