She will be loved- Maroon 5
Narrative
The music video is a sad love story. Its about a women who's got a rich, deadbeat, abusive husband, their relationship is juxtaposed with that of their daughters relationship who's with a young man, who is played by Adam Levine. The young man is seen to constantly obsess over his girlfriends mother. He understands that although she is constantly rejected by her husband is not just an emotional wreck but is beautiful and attractive, maybe even more attractive than his own girlfriend. It shows how the young man and his girlfriends mother start and affair, which at the end is found out by the daughter who is obviously shocked.
Conventional/unconventional
I think that there are both conventional and unconventional themes running throughout. The video contains a typical affair love story however its unique in the way that the women he is having an affair with is his girlfriends mother. This is very unconventional. Also apart from the affair the mothers life is complicated with her abusive relationship. A conventional theme of this music video is the part when he is playing his song at a bar and miming the lyrics, this happens in many music videos.
Visuals
The visuals are very simple and camera stays still throughout the video. However at the end of the video there is an interesting visual, it shows an extreme close up on the young mans eyes, his girlfriends eyes and his girlfriends mothers eyes after they had been caught cheating, it shows the raw emotion in each of their eyes, it shows the shock in all of their eyes and it shows the hurt in the daughters eyes. In my opinion this visual was clever as it could help the audience relate any one of the three in the situation...maybe not that exact one but similar ones!
What works/what doesn't
i think the story line can be quite confusing and it took me a while to realise that it was his girlfriends mother that he was having an affair with, the story does explain it very well. However i think once you've got the grasp of the storyline then it does work very well and i like the fact at the end that we are left on a cliffhanger as it leaves the audience to make up their own ending to the story.
Editing: a montage is used near the end when Adam Levine and his girlfriend are flirting and her mother is onlooking enviously. She becomes frustrated and the audience is positioned in the mother's head as a collective of moments that they've had with one another during their affair is played as a montage of flashbacks. Having seen all of the flashbacks, the mother cannot look at her daughter any longer and proceeds to storm off - the montage prompting her abrupt exit.
