This video id solely a performance from the artist, however the lyrics do provide a narrative for the video.
A strong technical code for this video is the use of lighting, which could either be natural or studio lighting. The dark hue connotes the emotions of sadness, anger and desperation expressed in the lyrics. The pace of editing in this video is also very important. The pace does not stay constant throughout the video, despite the consistency of the beat; at certain times it is slow and a others it is fast. This is effective as the pace of editing can often be compared to the video or even resemble the heart beat.
In relation to mise-en-scene, Shawn has been dressed in fashionable but casual modern clothing by wearing a brown leather jacket, grey t-shirt, skinny jeans and vans. This seems to conform to the stereotypical teenage male look in America, where he is significantly popular. Dressing in this more casual way allows teenagers of a similar age to feel like they have more in common with the star and develop a more personal connection.
The significance of both emotional and physical pain is represented when Shawn smashes his head on the window of his car. Whilst laying on the floor, he is surrounded by shards of broken glass. This can be said to resemble shards of his broken heart.
To add dramatic effect, all the punches/hits are slowed down to show the physical impact of the hits. This is further reinforced by the tracking shots that are used to follow the movements of Shawn throughout the video.
The final shots show us Shawn walking away from the site of the violence, this denotes him also walking away from the memory of the relationship. This is further reinforced when Shawn is seen washing the blood off of his face, as if he is also washing away the pain.
