Billie Jean by Michael Jackson

Billie Jean- Michael Jackson

This is a pop/r&b video, which largely follows the characteristics of the genre but with a significantly classic influence of Michael Jackson himself.
Both the song and the video have the generic 'contagious' tempo, which makes you want to dance along. This is effective as it is inclusive to all the listeners and provides them with a common connection to the song as one for social listening. Furthermore, the well known scene of Michael walking/dancing along the lighting steps are in time with the beat and are being traced by the camera. For its time, this was significantly advanced technology and an extremely creative idea for a music video, which is why it is still so memorable today, even if you are not a fan of Michael Jackson you are aware of his unique identity.
There is no much relevance between the narrative of the video and the lyrics. However, it can be assumed that Michael is being followed by the paparazzi. This is suggested by the repeated large flashes and tracking of the camera. Also, the lyrics suggest that Michael is being accused of being in a relationship, which would explain him being followed.
Further significance of Michael is shown by the display of his signature dance moves. This is effective as it reminds the audience that they are watching a performance by the extremely iconic Michael Jackson, rather than any other pop singer/dancer in the industry.
