Young and beautiful – Lana Del Ray
This video is largely a performance based as the lyrics have little relation to the narrative provided in the video, which challenges many conventions of modern videos.
Firstly, the lyric in the chorus of the song 'Will you still love me?' Is accompanied by a close-up shot of Lana in which she looks directly at the camera. This is effective as it looks like she is making eye contact with the viewer. This establishes a connection with the audience as it seems as if she is addressing them directly with the rhetorical question.
Themes of loneliness and isolation are strongly enforced in this video. Lana is consistently seen isolated from the orchestra seen in the video connoting the fear of herself being isolated and growing old alone.
For technical codes, lots of close-up shots of Lana are used. This creates a focus on her facial features (lips, eyes, cheeks) to develop a closer relationship with the audience. Furthermore, she is very well known for her extremely beautiful looks, therefore this help her establish her own physical iconography. In further reference to her iconography, her tone of voice is very soothing and dreamy. This is represented visually throughout the video with the use of a misty, blurred image running constantly through the video.
The intertextual reference in this video is to the 2013 film 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The choice of video, song and artist is beautifully matched with her soulful vocals to fit the 1920's era in which the novel is set.
you could also comment on the dramatic effect of the silhouette of the orchestra and how it connotes the dramatic and loud musical arrangment of the song. the way that lana's face is only shown and the background is pitch black, brings all the attention to her face and features.
