music video research 8: editing focus (Hey ya! by Outkast)

editing techniques

  • cuts to the crowd between lines
  • cycles between close-ups of the band leading up to the first chorus
  • clap signals transitional to a black and white tv
  • we see some footage before it transitions to a wide shot of a family living room where everyone is dancing
  • it transitions back to the tv 4 seconds later to showcase each of the band members and their names with close-up shots
  • after that it transitions to two consecutive close up shots of the kids in living room dancing
  • transitions back to the tv for a brief pause in the music
  • signalling by the man playing the keyboard, the music kicks in again and the camera cuts to the crowd
  • cuts between the band and the crowd  during the lyrics
  • this ultimately leads to one of the fangirls running on stage and grabbing the lead singer's arm
  • we see the security guard drag her off him in a wide shot of the band
  • several seconds later we cut to a shot of the backstage where the guard is carrying the woman out
  • cuts to the camera turning around to the audience then it transitions to the tv view of them
  • still in tv view, it cuts back to the band
  • close up of the drummer returns the view to the live performance
(current time at this point is 3 minutes 27 seconds)
