Music Video research | Pop
Artist: Beyonce
Song: Sorry
Visual Style/Mise en scene
The video starts off with the word "apathy"which means lack of interest. It starts with a medium shot of the of the dancers swaying back and forth. A looking room shot is used which could indicate she is thinking. The music of the video changes to a more powerful sound. We then see a women desend down the stairs whilst using a low angle shot so the audience are looking up at her. This creates owner and domination. A lot of track shots are used in and out towards the artist and dancers which also makes them seem in our face which makes us feel as an audience that we have to listen almost, i think its a good technique to use as it makes people pay attention. A long shot is used when we see all the dancers dancing. Tilted shots are used which gives it a more relaxing feel to it and it show how its mad to look not fully structured.
Narrative including techniques
I can take from this video that the artist is going through some tough times and finds it hard to trust her husband. The fact that she has used all women in the video shows empowerment and she doesn't need the man that cheated on her. She is telling a story of her heart break in a sarcastic way when it says "ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks" which is showing how she is being forward and honest with her audience which Beyonce never used to really do. The theme of empowerment is used when she says "i ain't thinking bout' you" which shows she doesn't need a man to life a good life.
Conventional/Unconventional
I would say that this video is conventional in the sense of performance to camera its presented in a good way because it tells a story and gets the audience. The dancing in the video reinforces the genre of pop as its seen a lot in these type of videos. I would say that the video is unconventional in the sense that its not a typical Beyonce video as she has normally got very structured choreography, this video is more relaxed.
What works/What doesn't?
The concept of the video is well thought out and the portrayal of the narrative she is telling the audience exactly how she is feeling.
