My Friends Over You by New Found Glory

For visual style of this video, it is firstly notable that a range of different camera techniques and angles are used. Firstly, high angle shots are used as a method of intimidation from the source behind the camera. Also, tracking shots are used in order to follow the movements of the character and to give the audience a feeling that they are actively involved in the video. Extreme close-ups are used to provide a connection between the artist and the audience, through eye contact. Furthermore, multiple shots overlapping are used as a signifier of time passing.

The narrative is slightly conventional, in that it is the typical pop-punk 'angst' break up video in which it can be assumed that the lead singer is the victim of heartbreak and is now performing to a crowd of people of a similar age to express how he has moved on.  However, there is an unconventional juxtaposition in the video of including a choir. Both classical/choir and the genre of pop-punk are opposing genres in their characteristics, so including one within another is very unusual.

Another unconventional element of the video is the humour that comes from mocking typical pop-punk videos. For example, the scene with three pretty girls with t-shirts saying 'typical', 'video' and 'girl' on them. This humour is further reinforced when later in the video three of the band members wear similar t-shirts saying 'look', 'at', 'us'.

I believe that the mocking in this video works well as it helps to differentiate this video from others of its genre. However, I find the stereotypical break up narrative quite repetitive and cheesy.
