LOOK Magazine - Target audience/Appeals

The target audience for Look magazine is both the mainstream and the aspirer. Although these two audience types have different needs and wants Look magazine fulfils the needs of both audience types. The mainstream audience look for familiarity and security, they like it when things stay the same and think in terms of we rather than me, however the aspirer look for status and love to consume, they care more for style over substance and are very materialistic. All of these needs are fulfilled by Look magazine as it allows the mainstream to follow the crowd but also allow the aspirer to stand our and gain attention.  

One piece of evidence from LOOK magazine that attracts the target audience as well as reinforcing ideological messages is for the 2017 9th Jan issue, LOOK FIT 2017, YOGA. This article shows that although you will be working out, you shouldn't look like the typical girl working out that is all hot and sweaty you should be calm and classy. The line "Mood-boosting beauty that's all natural" suggests that with the help of moisturiser, face creams etc. you will feel better than if you didn't have all these products. This reinforces the ideological messages as it shows that no matter what, you should do your utter best to look good no matter where you go even if it is to a simple yoga class, you should stand out and the only way you will stand out is by having all these products on your face and body, which will attract the aspirer as they are all about being the first one to know something and want to be the trend setter. The article also had three different head bands showing that you should disguise the fact that you are sweating because you are of a higher standard an you should look presentable. One of these headbands says "Ivy Park" which is a reference to Beyoncé also reinforcing ideological messages of the magazine that celebrity is important and we should look up to these celebrities as they are to be idolised and we should strive to be just like them, this would attract the mainstream as they want to be part of the crowd. They want to fit in and enjoy pop culture the same as everyone else, they want to be part of the trend but not the one to start the trend. This article will attract both audience types as it allows the mainstream to follow tends where as it also allows the aspirer to start trends.  

Another article that will attract the audience is the 30 day challenge that improves your skin. "The perfect 30 day plan to get you glowing from head to toe", this appeals to the mainstream because theylook for a routine and this article provides a plan for them to follow. Also it is aimed for the working class woman as most of the products are home remedies that use products such as honey, or avocado. This will also attract the aspirer as it allows them to have flawless skin and look better than everyone else once again allowing them to gain status and attention.  

Overall Look magazine allows the aspirer to gain status as well as allow the mainstream to have security and familiarity.
