This front cover was taken in 2008, just before his successful 2016 presidential election campaign. In 2008, Trump had considered running for presidency in 1988, 2000, and 2004. The 2000 campaign was the most notable of the trio, as Trump failed in his attempt miserably, so the masthead being placed on Donald Trump could be incorrect, as he wasn't successful in the campaign. But this, evident by Trump's smile and bright, vibrant colours, isn't what the encoders want the audiences preferred reading to be. Trump has been represented as a successful businessman, and the encoders want the audience to know that they must read the magazine to be as successful as Trump is. Underneath the masthead reads "What achievers read" showing that the Aspirer looks up to Trump as a role model, and they want to be like him due to his fame and wealth. The suit reinforces this idea that all businessmen are wealthy, successful, but most importantly, an 'icon' to achievers and aspirers. With Trump staring into the camera, it could create a personal connection between him and the audience (Aspirers), as if he's talking to them. The smile represents that he's proud of how successful he is.
The encoders have represented Trump in the way that most of society recognise him as, succesful and rich, due to his appearances on "The Apprentice". They have used persuasive words on the front cover, highlighting in Itallics the word Achievers to show how big he is, and this is what all Aspirer say in life should read, to get inside knowledge on the business world. This idea is shown with the bright gold colour, representative of money and wealth. This colour stands out more than a boring, dull grey colour which wouldn't attract aspirers to read the magazine. However, there could be an oppositional reading to the magazine. The constant use of red, both on Trump's name, and on his tie, could represent this idea of danger, and Trump isn't a man you would Li,e to anger. This idea is also reinforced with the shadow on half of his face, possibly giving the idea that there is a dark side to Trump that the media, and society doesn't know, and that side isn't this rich, wealthy, successful side that the audience is so used to seeing of Trump.
I think Success' audience is likely to take the preferred reading, however, as the magazine strives to target achievers, and to see Trump as the successful one who should be listened by everyone if they want to be successful too. The business suit, and the model of Trump would likely target a male audience, as the stereotype of the suit is that it designed for the dominant one in the family, the male, the 'breadwinner' so to speak, the one making the most money should be the man. Trump, also, wouldn't target females more than males, due to his connotation that he has made of females in the past. The encoders want the audience to know that although they may never be as successful as Trump, they can still be a successful business man if they follow the tips of Trump. The society we live in means that more people are becoming Aspirer, and achievers, as people now want to be rich, and famous, to live that successful life, however it isn't yet the dominant ideology, as more people are happy to live the 'mainstreamer' life, they don't aspire to be a successful businessman, they are happy doing the normal, everyday activity, making the magazine 'niche', as it doesn't target an audience that is the majority ideology in society.
